How they ended up here / Why Civil Engineering

Daniel’s earliest influence was watching his father lean over a drafting table, French curve in hand, as he designed sport fishing vessels. Those experiences translated into a vocational quest to draw and design – to engineer. His father’s advice: find a way to ‘blend art with science’. Years later Daniel went on to the University of Central Florida where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, focusing on urban transportation networks, while dabbling in welding and metal fabrications in the structures lab.

Upon graduation he moved to Hong Kong with his wife and merged his technical and creative interest designing live-aboard (house) boats. When he returned to the States a year later he nestled into Central Virginia where his professional interests in urban transportation systems and adaptive reuse site design continued to develop, all while exploring what it means to be a Civil Engineer in the 21st century. Fluent in environmental and historic sensitivity Daniel has routinely led design efforts for adaptive site re-use as well as urban streetscape retrofit projects.

Now, as a Principal of Line and Grade, Daniel listens closely to clients and citizens as he develops projects from concept through construction; with a passion to push the boundaries for what has become standard practice.
