Designing accessible pathways for the University of Virginia

Given the topography of Central Virginia, it can be challenging to maintain a barrier-free accessibility program for all areas of a particular landscape.

The University of Virginia’s Central Grounds, the Rotunda, and the Academical Village are a desirable destination for visitors and each represent a daily part of life and movement for the University community.

Line and Grade, as a consultant to Wolf Josey Landscape Architects, worked with the University to create a vital, accessible, and barrier-free connection between the Central Grounds Parking Garage and Central Grounds.

This was no small feat, as the plaza adjacent to the parking garage elevators and the plaza west of Monroe Hall are separated by approximately 22 vertical feet in elevation differential.
